About Me

After my high school education, I was matriculated into the New Asia College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where I found my passion in Mathematics. In 1981, I received a Croucher Foundation fellowship to further my graduate program in mathematics, under the supervision of Professor Nigel Hitchin in St. Catherine College of the University of Oxford.

After an interesting tour through Stony Brook University in New York and Rice University in Texas, I finally found my home in the University of California at Riverside in 1990. At UC Riverside, I have been a chair (since 2015) and an associate dean (2000-2004). I also had a visiting appointment at Tsinghua University in Beijing to assist in developing the new Yau Mathematical Sciences Center in 2010 and I remain one of the center's advisers.

Statewide, I have been involved in K-12 education through the California Mathematics Project since 1999 in various capacity. In recent years, I spend times to work with graduate students at Riverside to develop micro-tutorials for freshman calculus.

During this time, my wife Sau King Chiu and I raise a daughter Jessica and a son Michael.

While it seems like just yesterday that my children were scribbling on the blackboard in my office, my son is now a law student at Stanford Law School while my daughter is pursuing a PhD at UC Berkeley.

My wife and I believe in the importance of education at every level so, on top of my various roles in higher education, we also run a preschool where we delight in flourishing young minds.

In my spare moments, I enjoy singing Chinese Opera with my wife and friends.

My younger sister Wai Yin and brother Ka Yeung are also in the academia.
